Siwa Oasis Travel Guide

Everything to know about Siwa Oasis: Shali fortress, the Oracle of Amun, Cleopatra’s Spring, salt lakes, the Great Sand Sea and how to get there from Cairo.

Deep in the Western Desert, close to the Libyan border, Siwa is a green island of palm trees, olive groves and salt lakes surrounded by golden dunes. Its people have their own language and traditions, and life here moves at a slower, gentler pace than anywhere else in Egypt.

Getting there

Siwa is a long journey from Cairo – most of a day by road, via the Mediterranean coast at Marsa Matrouh. We break the drive with lunch by the sea, so the trip becomes part of the experience. Because of the distance, plan at least three days, ideally four or more.

Things to see in Siwa

  • Shali – the old mud-brick fortress town in the centre of the oasis, with views over the palms at sunset.
  • The Temple of the Oracle of Amun, where Alexander the Great came to consult the oracle.
  • The Mountain of the Dead, a hill of ancient rock-cut tombs.
  • Cleopatra’s Spring – a natural stone pool fed by a warm spring, perfect for a swim.
  • The salt lakes, where you can float in water saltier than the sea.
  • Fatnas Island, a favourite spot for sunset over the lake.

The Great Sand Sea

South of the oasis begins one of the largest dune fields in the world. A 4x4 safari takes you over the dunes to hidden springs, with sandboarding and a camp dinner at sunset.

The 2027 solar eclipse

On 2 August 2027 Siwa will be in the path of a total solar eclipse, with around five and a half minutes of darkness at midday. It is one of the best places in Egypt to watch it, far from the crowds.

Respect local customs

Siwa is a conservative community. Dress modestly in the town, ask before photographing people, especially women, and keep swimwear for the springs and the desert camps.
