Best Time to Visit Egypt: A Month-by-Month Guide

When to visit Egypt for sightseeing, Nile cruises and the Red Sea – seasons, temperatures, crowds and festivals explained by our team in Giza.

Egypt is a year-round destination, but the best time for you depends on what you want to do. Sightseeing in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan is easiest in the cooler months, while the Red Sea is at its best in the long, warm summer.

October to April: the classic season

From October to April days are sunny and pleasant, typically between 20 and 28°C in Cairo and a little warmer in Luxor and Aswan. This is the most comfortable time for long days at the temples and for Nile cruises. December, January and the Easter holidays are the busiest weeks, so book hotels and cruises early.

May to September: summer

Summer is hot, especially in Upper Egypt where afternoons often pass 40°C. It is still a good time to travel if you plan carefully: we start sightseeing at sunrise, rest in the afternoon and finish with evening visits. Hotels are quieter, and the Red Sea is perfect for snorkelling and diving.

Special dates to plan around

  • 22 February and 22 October – the Abu Simbel Sun Festival, when sunlight reaches the inner sanctuary.
  • 2 August 2027 – the total solar eclipse, visible in Luxor and Siwa.
  • Christmas and New Year – festive sunshine on the Nile.
  • Ramadan – a beautiful time to experience evening life in Cairo; some opening hours are shorter.

Our recommendation

For a first trip combining Cairo and the Nile, choose October to April. If you also want beach time, add a few days on the Red Sea – it is warm enough to swim almost all year.
