Visiting the Pyramids of Giza: Tips from Locals

Practical tips for visiting the Giza pyramids and the Sphinx – the best time of day, what to see, camel rides and how to avoid the crowds.

Our hotel sits a few minutes from the Giza plateau, so we have walked these paths hundreds of times. Here is what we tell our guests before their first visit.

Go early

The plateau opens in the early morning. Arrive at opening time to enjoy cool air, soft light and far fewer people than in the late morning, when coach groups arrive.

What to see

  • The Great Pyramid of Khufu – walk around its base and, if you wish, buy a separate ticket to go inside.
  • The panoramic viewpoint, where all nine pyramids line up for the classic photo.
  • The Sphinx and the Valley Temple of Khafre with its granite pillars.
  • The Grand Egyptian Museum nearby – combine it with the pyramids in one day.

Camel and horse rides

A short camel ride to the panoramic point is a lovely experience. Agree on the duration and price before you start, or book it through your guide so everything is arranged in advance.

What to wear and bring

Wear comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen, and bring water. The ground is sandy and uneven in places. Small cash is useful for tips and extras.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you go inside the Great Pyramid?

Yes, with a separate ticket bought at the site. The passages are narrow and steep, so it is not recommended for people who dislike tight spaces.
