Alexandria: A Day Trip from Cairo to the Mediterranean

Plan a day in Alexandria: the Qaitbay Citadel, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Roman catacombs, Pompey’s Pillar, the Corniche and the best seafood.

Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria was for centuries one of the greatest cities of the ancient world, home to the Lighthouse of Pharos and the famous Library. Today it is Egypt’s second city, with a long seafront, a cooler breeze and a character all of its own.

Getting there

Alexandria is around three hours from Cairo by private car on the desert road, which makes it an easy day trip. You can also stay one night and continue along the coast.

What to see in one day

  • The Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa – Roman-era tombs that mix Egyptian and Greek art.
  • Pompey’s Pillar – a giant granite column on the site of the ancient Serapeum.
  • The Qaitbay Citadel – a fortress built on the site of the ancient lighthouse, with views of the harbour.
  • The Bibliotheca Alexandrina – the modern library inspired by the ancient one, with museums inside.
  • A walk along the Corniche and a seafood lunch by the harbour.

When to go

Alexandria is pleasant most of the year. Summer is warm but fresher than Cairo, while winter brings cooler days and occasional rain from the sea.
